I ran a quick scan that solved the blue-screen problem, then reversed the configuration changes and ran a full scan. VIPRE lists threats as it finds them and reports how long the scan has been running; on scans after the first it offers an estimate of time remaining. At about 25 minutes to scan my standard clean system, I found it to be reasonably fast. After all of the scans completed, I checked the product's success using my own tools, giving it full credit for removal if it wiped out all executable traces of a threat and half-credit if it tried but didn't get all the executables.
It detected every single one of the malware samples and successfully removed most of them. However, the handful that weren't fully removed included a couple of rootkits that were still functional, which is not good. It did reboot and run its boot-time scan on the majority of the test systems. VIPRE's score for this test was 9. VIPRE didn't do quite as well when tested against commercial keyloggers in place of malware.
It missed a couple of the samples and didn't fully remove all of those it did detect. It scored 6. But I give much less weight to the commercial keylogger test since these can only be installed by someone with full physical and password access to your computer. Clicking on a file is enough to trigger VIPRE's scan, and it wiped out two-thirds of my malware installers on sight.
It didn't waste time asking me whether to delete the files—it just did the job and reported its action. VIPRE's real-time protection reported on each file at least four times—it's very enthusiastic. Fortunately there's a box you can check to acknowledge all pending notifications about the program in question. That's handy.
